An Updated Guide to Charity Care Amounts in Chicago
The 2011 data on hospitals is out from the Illinois Department of Public Health, so I’ve decided to revise the list I did in April. This is for total charity care as a percentage of the net revenue for Chicago non-profit hospitals.
Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center: 3.6 percent
Children’s Memorial Hospital (now Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago): 0.3 percent*
Holy Cross Hospital: 8.3 percent
Jackson Park Hospital: 11 percent
John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County: 43.7 percent
LaRabida Children’s Hospital: 0.5 percent*
Loretto Hospital: 6.7 percent
Mercy Medical Center: 1.4 percent
Methodist Hospital: 1.1 percent
Mount Sinai Hospital: 6.7 percent
Northwestern Memorial Hospital: 3.2 percent
Norwegian American: 4.9 percent
Our Lady of Resurrection: 2.7 percent
Resurrection Medical Center: 1.1 percent
Roseland Hospital: 1.7 percent
Rush University Medical Center: 1.8 percent
Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center: 2.3 and 0.3 percent respectively
South Shore Hospital: 6.9 percent
St. Anthony: 5.6 percent
St. Bernard: 8.1 percent
St. Joseph’s Hospital: 0.7 percent
Swedish Covenant Hospital: 2.9 percent
Thorek Memorial Hospital: 2.2 percent
University of Chicago Medical Center: 1.2 percent
University of Illinois Medical Center: 2.2 percent
Some interesting things about this list are that Comer Children’s Hospital’s data is included with University of Chicago Medical Center, which still has really low charity care numbers; Advocate Illinois Masonic’s numbers jumped over a year and Stroger’s numbers really went up over a year.
Also, I made two errors in April by including Weiss (which is For-profit) and excluding South Shore Hospital. If you see any errors, let me know.
*Both LaRabida and Children’s Memorial received a significant portion of their revenue from Medicaid, which could be a contributing factor to the low charity care number.
